Sigiriya City of Sri Lanka
Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is a remarkable ancient rock fortress located in the Matale District of Sri Lanka, near Dambulla.
Here are the key highlights:
Places in Sigiriya
Lion's Paw Terrace
On a small plateau halfway up the rock, a massive gateway was carved into the shape of a lion. Only the giant paws remain today, but they mark the start of the final climb to the summit.
The Summit (The Sky Palace)
The flat top of the rock contains the ruins of King Kashyapa's royal palace. Visitors can explore the foundations of the residence, as well as several large rock cut pools and cisterns that were part of an advanced rainwater harvesting system.
Royal Palace Ruins
The top of the 200 meter high rock contains the foundations of the ancient palace of King Kassappa, who ruled from 477 to 495 AD. From the summit, you can enjoy stunning 360 degree panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Sigiriya Museum
Located near the entrance, this museum provides exhibits and a scale model of the fortress, offering valuable context on the site's history and archaeology.
Water Gardens
These symmetrically planned landscaped gardens at the foot of the rock are one of the oldest in the world. They feature advanced surface and subterranean hydraulic systems, ponds, and fountains.
