Galle City of Sri Lanka

Galle is a historic and atmospheric city located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, renowned as the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia.

Here are the key highlights:

  • Galle Fort: The city's main attraction is the magnificent 17th-century fortification, built originally by the Portuguese and then extensively fortified by the Dutch. The Fort is not just a relic, it is a living monument, where old ramparts enclose a grid of narrow, cobbled streets lined with colonial era buildings that now house boutique hotels, cafes, art galleries, and shops.
  • Architecture and Atmosphere: The fort showcases a unique blend of European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. Walking along the massive sea facing ramparts (especially at sunset) and exploring the inner streets provides a highly charming and distinctive experience.
  • Key Landmarks: Prominent features within the Fort include the iconic Galle Lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, and the historic Old Dutch Hospital (now a shopping and dining complex).
  • Surrounding Coast: Just outside the city, you'll find some of the island's most beautiful beaches, such as Unawatuna and Dalawella.
  • Galle is one of the island's most visited and culturally rich destinations, offering a perfect mix of history, architecture, and beach access.
